The Creation of Reyna

Hi everyone!!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend.  Okay as promised, here is more on Reyna:

I'm a villains kinda girl and my favorite one is the Evil Queen.  So that's who inspired Reyna's creation.

I was killing time on YouTube the other day and started watching some artist videos.  I was so fascinated by all of the different styles.

So I decided to share my process with you.  Please join me in my studio :D

Thank you so much for watching.  I hope you enjoyed seeing Reyna come to life.

The original canvas is for sale HERE

She's also available in a beautiful porcelain ornament HERE.  Thank you stopping by & Have a Wonderful Day!

My latest happenings, let's catch up!

Happy Friday everyone!!  I hope you've had a wonderful week and are off to an even better weekend.  We had the chance to get away last weekend so we went to the beach and oh man it was awesome.  It was still a little to cool for me to get in the water but it was great just getting away.

This week it's back to the grind!  I was up on the Paper Wings blog on Tuesday with a tutorial on this tag.  I share how I created the handmade flowers, here's the link if you'd like to check it out: Winged Things.

I'm also preparing for my very first out of town show.  I'll be at the Robstown/Corpus Christi Peddler's Show May 30th - Jun 1st.  So if you're in the area, come out and say hello!

The Peddler Show

Here's a look at my latest canvas: Reyna.  She's inspired by my all time favorite Disney character, The Evil Queen.

More on her coming soon!  Thank you so much for joining me today.  Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend.

Selena Inspired Mixed Media Art

Hi everyone!!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and Mother's Day.  I've been busy working on a new canvas and I'm finally ready to share it with you.  This piece is inspired by a beautiful photo I found on Pinterest of the late Tejano music singer Selena.

Selena Quintanilla Perez 1971 - 1995

This is my interpenetration of the photo.  I decided to give her angel wings which proved to be a challenge for me but first let me show you how I started.

I'm using a 12x24" canvas.  I added scraps of blueprints, book text and joint tape backing to the background using matte gel medium.

Next I applied a thin layer of gesso and then chose my paint colors.

Using the photo as a guide, I sketched her out.

I always start with the flesh tones and then start adding the eyes and hair.  I go keep going over the colors with highlights and shadows until I get a look that I like.

I've never done angel wings but I really wanted to add them so I decided to just go for it.

It took me about four tries before I was happy with the wings.  I wanted share pics of my first two tries but I couldn't get the files to save properly.  This was my 3rd attempt and my guys kept telling me it looked like she was wearing a feather boa, lol.  So I went back to the drawing board.

I followed my son's advice and added a top bone then varied the sizes of the feathers.  Of course he still had constructive criticism to share, lol.  He even drew examples for me to follow :D

I think she turned out gorgeous!

I added hidden sugar skulls like this one in her bangle.

For even more texture, I stamped roses, flourishes and musical notes to the background.

Here's a look at the two together.

I'm not sure if anyone would recognize this as Selena but that's okay because she's a stunner either way.  Thanks so much for stopping by today and remember:

Hi everyone, thank you so much for stopping by!!  Today I'm working with the gorgeous 7 Dots Studio Nature Walk Collection that was generously supplied by our guest Nani ke Ola.  I'm also using these beautiful Paper Wings Productions stamp sets: Writing Backgrounds, Vintage Lace, Fringe Lace, Sunburst Pattern, Hanging Stars and Perfect Alphabet.

I'm using a 12x12 black matte board for my background.  I wanted to make sure I had a strong background for my wet mediums.  The beautiful weathered wood 7 Dots Studio paper is called Musical Blooms.  I trimmed it down to 10.5" to allow the a black border to show.  Next I added texture using a Heidi Swap stencil and mask set with molding paste.

Once the molding paste began to set, I imprinted the butterfly with the Writing Backgrounds Script stamp.

After that I spritz the butterfly with black Tattered Angels spray ink and outlined it with a white Signo pen.  Later on I decided that the white edges need to be toned down so I went over them with a grey marker.

Using the butterfly mask included in the Heidi Swapp stencil set, I began creating a stamped layer.  This is the Vintage Lace stamp.

I added more white paint splatters to balance out the splatters printed on the 7 Dots patterned paper.

Layering time!  I layered a doily from my stash, Nature Walk tags and stickers.  I also added a tag that I created using the Fringe Lace and Sunburst Pattern stamps.

My focal image is from the Vintage Cuties Clip Art Sheet.

I created my sentiment using both the Perfect Alphabet and Hanging Stars stamp set.

Finally to soften things up a bit I added beautiful ribbon and trim.

Okay, it's time to send you off to the final stop of the hop: The Aviary
